June Newsletter

Remember the song, "June is Busting Out all Over" from the

musical, Carousel"?  That song has been running through my

mind for weeks now.  I know that with the "iffy" weather it

feels as if Spring has been a long time coming, but with all the

good energy at the store there's a certain jauntiness that

seems to have put a little "spring" in everyone's step.  Perhaps

it's due to some of the classes that we've scheduled for June or

some of the luscious new "spring" yarns that have recently

found their way onto our shelves.

Take a look and let me know what you think - or what you may

be interested in!  The only thing you absolutely have to do is

say "Hello".

June Class Reminder

If you're interested in one of Nicky Epstein's classes or Bert

& Dana Freed's offerings (scroll below), please sign up now.

All are almost filled to the brim!  There are only two

spaces left in Nicky's classes and the bead crochet class and

color theory classes are selling briskly.  With  the start dates

just around the corner, it would be smart to reserve your space

as soon as possible.

To add the the fun, we are also featuring lace knitting

classes with the fabulous Lisa Daehlin:

Unveiling the Anatomy of the Stitch
Three Lace Classes with Lisa Daehlin

-Knitting a Lace Sampler  Thurs, June 11; 6-8pm

-Knitting Lace in the Round  Thurs, June 18; 6-8pm

-Hairpin & Broomstick Lace Crochet  Thurs, June 25; 6-8pm

Sign up for either/all  of these distinct  classes. One is

not required for the other, but you’ll learn a lot about the

structure and resulting beauty of lace if you take more than one

Additionally, the techniques of Hairpin and Broomstick Lace

expand the palette of skills for any crochet or knitting artist.

Each class is $50.

The Yarn - The Yarn - The Yarn

We've recently (like today) received a new shipment of

Malabrigo in all colors and weights.  Hurry on in, and while

you're there, ask to see the new washable "Vintage Wool" from

Berocco.  Sophisticated colors and wash and dryability make

this yarn a great choice for afghans or blankets - not to mention

sweaters for the older kids.

The Sale - The Sale - The Sale

It's time for our annual T-Shirt sale, and this time, we're

putting them on sale for 50% off.  Pick up a couple - they're

ideal  for bathing suit cover-ups or fun in the sun run-arounds.

We've also got a terrific assortment of knitting kits for kids.

Any one of these completely contained kits can help a

child have fun, learn to knit and make a knitted creature.

They're the ideal choice for summer craft projects and at 25%

off, you might wish to consider more than one.  If you're going

to visit someone with kids or taking your own along, they

make the perfect surprise gift.

This month's "Yarn of the Month" is Be Sweet.  We're

celebrating the arrival of Nadine's Be Sweet trunk show, by

offering 10% off on all the Be Sweet  yarns.  Nadine calls her

yarns and accessories "Creative Products with a Conscience"

since a portion of every sale is donated to cottage industry and

educational efforts in South Africa.

We're also carrying a small selection of Be Sweet's

wonderful hand hooked bags.  Perhaps you've seen me

toting around my orange "Knitty City" bag? It was  a custom

job and I get so many complements on it!

April Birthdays!

Knitty City started the first weekend of April off with a neighborhood event worth noting.   April 5th is  Xenobia Bailey's birthday and we thought it  fitting to invite  her to the store to celebrate  in a yarn related setting.   So, yesterday was the day. About  30 of her friends dropped by in the afternoon to sip tea, nibble on some goodies and wish the Queen of Crochet a good day -- and year(s). Here is a picture of the birthday Goddess  herself in one of her own creations. Below, you'll see part of the "court" that danced attendance at the celebration.  Please  note the presence of Barbie, who did a little welcomed gate-crashing in some hand-knit togs of her own.    (Barbie  turned 50 this year, and  since  she heard that 50 is the "new  30", she's been celebrating non-stop.)

Once again, we all  wish Xenobia  many years of health, prosperity and creation, and  thank her for her commitment to the world of fiber art!

April, with its constant showers. is proving to be a good yarn month at the store.  Lots of beautiful Malabrigo lace weight was just delivered the other day, and it's selling fast!  We continue to build our reputation as one of the best knitting book stores in Manhattan.  The new double knitting book from Interweave has joined the titles on the front table.  It's simply beautiful and promises to be a resource for all time which is not surprising considering it's from School House Press.

MARCH 2009

"C" IS FOR CROCHET

Lately, we have been honored to come into contact with some of the most interesting crochet artists on the planet.  In recognition, we are declaring March to be crochet month at Knitty City. You will see some expressive works of art in the window which showcase our passion about this creative force, including some fabulous hand crafted hats by Christine Bevington that will be for sale for a limited time only. KC will also be hosting special classes, featuring the fabulous Lisa Daehlin  (http://www.delisa.us).  She will be teaching the joys of granny squares, the beauty and combination force of Tunisian Crochet and the special technique that is Hairpin Lace and Broomstick Lace Crochet. (Please see our "Classes" page for detailed information on each one of these classes.) In addition, our usual crochet classes will be on-going and heaven only knows what additional thoughts and crochet related opportunities will be popping up around here.

We are also using the month of March to debut our new column on Fiber Artists. Since March is Crochet Month we thought it only fitting to profile one of our favorite crochet artists: Xenobia Bailey. Please see our new page to read about an interesting meet up with one of our national needleart treasures.

As much as we revel in crochet, knitting is as much a passion for most of us. We are happy to announce that we will be joining forces and efforts with the Big Apple Knitting Guild to promote classes that feature Joan Schroeder, Knitting Master and designer.

On Tuesday, March 24, we will be hosting an all afternoon - and early evening class at the store. As you know, we are closed on Tuesdays, but since we find a quiet store to be an effective arena for concentration, we "open" for students who register for special master classes. Joan will be teaching the knitting of trapezoid and rectangular shawls from 2-5 PM, and Entrelac from 6-9 PM.  We are promoting this event in cooperation with the Big Apple Knitter's Guild. The rate for BAKG members is $45.00/class; non-members is $60.00.

Those of us who like a little levity with our knitting tend to like Franklin Habit (aka "The Funniest Man in Knitting") a whole lot.  His book, "It Itches - A Stash of Knitting Cartoons" is as entertaining as his blog is informative - the-panopticon.blogspot.com.  Please join us on Sunday, March 29th, from 3-5 PM when he graces our store with his presence and his humor.  He'll be signing his book and telling us about his adventures in creativity and knitting.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

Please note that in the month of April, we will be featuring Melissa Leapman (April 7th) in one of our Tuesday Master Classes. For everyone who has ever fallen in love with cables (and who among us is immune?), Melissa will be teaching the fine art of cabling for beginners as well as for experienced cabling enthusiasts. (Classes will be from 2-5 (Beginner's) and from 6-9 for the experienced cabler who has mastered the fundamentals of the process.   Melissa is as prolific as she is gifted.  Her two most recent books are "Cables Untangled" and "Continuous Cables".  Please call the store early to reserve a space as we anticipate classes to be in demand and we can only take a maximum of 16 people per class.

One more thing:  Our Yarn of the Month is Fable. We are offering 10% off on any purchase of this pure baby alpaca! It's a 50 gram skein (145 Yards) and works up beautifully on a US size 7 needle. Come on in and take a look and don't forget to say "Hi".

FEBRUARY 2009

COME TO TEA!

Maybe it is Valentine's Day, maybe it's the desire to be warm and cozy, maybe it's part of the winter ritual, but, suddenly, tea seems to be all the rage.

With that in mind, we're thrilled to announce a special event here at Knitty City:  Xenobia Bailey and the Art of Tea.  When we heard that one of our all-time favorite fiber artists was also involved with importing African tea, we knew we just had to have her to tea and invite some friends.  So, on Friday, February 13th, 6-8 PM, we're holding an after-hours tea and artist presentation at the store.  We're limiting the number of attendees to 25, so be sure to sign up now and insure yourself of a seat. There will be a charge of $25.00 to help defray costs, but we promise you a unique moment in time.  Xenobia will be presenting her work along with her teas and we think her exploration of the creative will be as fascinating as her work. (www.xenba.blogspot.com)

While we're on the subject of events, here's a rundown of some of our other February offerings:

Saturday, February 21st, 12-2 PM

Join us and welcome Kathy Goldner, Publisher of Knitting Out Loud Audio Books (www.knittingoutloud.com), and "KnitKnit: Profiles + Projects from Knitting's New Wave",  and current fiber artist in residence (through April 30th) at the Museum of Art & Design (www.madmuseum.org).  Kathy will be offering her newest and most popular tapes for sale and talking about the challenges and satisfaction  of capturing the creative spirit in audio format.  Personally, we're all for anything that allows us to combine our two favorite pastimes (knitting and reading) in one glorious process.

Wednesday, February 25th, 6-8PM                                   Another title on the  subject of tea and knitting has just come to our attention.    It is a  new book by Jane Gottelier with  photographs by Patrick Gottelier.  Aptly titled "Knitting and Tea", this book explores the intertwining history of these two passions.  Join us and meet the authors and get your signed copy at the store.

As you can see, February, despite its acknowledged drabness, is shaping up in a colorful fashion at Knitty City.  The big news (for us) is really the events, but a recent trip to TNNA has also resulted in some lively new yarns and a new line of needles which we're thrilled to be introducing to the echelons of upper west side knitters. There are some fascinating new yarns in from Berroco along with Norah Gaughan's newest pattern issue.  Also in is the new issue of Vogue Knitting and a host of books, too numerous to list in this format.  Don't forget to pick up the new Rowan Issue #45 and two new "studio" books from Rowan.  As usual, they are amazing, both visually and from a design perspective.

As usual, there's only one answer: Come in, take a look and don't forget to say Hello!  It may be the cold season, but you'll always get a "warm" welcome at Knitty City.

WHEE!

NOW WE ARE THREE!

We  had to share this wonderful creation in honor of  our 3rd Anniversary. The day was wonderful, traffic was brisk and enthusiasm was over the top.  It was especially gratifying to see all our friends decked out in their knitted hand work.   The confection shown above  was created, in cooperation, by  some of the very talented staff at Knitty City with special help being provided by Pearl's daughter, Julie Chin.  Like all of Knitty City's efforts, it was a true collaboration of spirit and craft.   A heartfelt "Thank You",  again, from all of us to all of you for making Knitty City the special place it is.

Some offerings for January:  If the weather (plus the economy) has got you thinking of good investments of time, consider taking some classes at Knitty City.  We have availability in the sock classes (nothing like toasty toes), double knitting (twice the warmth and twice the effect) to name just a few.  Call and ask for Aryn or Zach  and sign up while there's still time.  Stay warm!

3 YEARS!

Where do I begin?  At the beginning, of course!.  That would take us  back to January 2006.  We had just opened the store and our dream was becoming a reality.   We had the yarns, we had the colleagues, and I had a vision of a neighborhood resource where good yarn and knitting and crochet design would bring together kindred spirits.

Fast forward 3 years and look at us!  We're thriving and we have widened our world immeasurably.  It now includes all of you, a ton of fabulous fibers  and friends and experiences that have enriched us beyond measure. It is impossible to list all the things for which I and my family and friends are grateful, but know how much we have loved being a part of the upper west side and your experiences in creating beautiful things -- and memories.

Even though it's January, the yarn keeps pouring in. There are sure to be new things to check out (think Madeline Tosh, as an example). All your favorites are  on hand, including some new shipments from Koigu, Brooklyn Handspun, Malabrigo, and Dream in Color.  Some cool new books and a few magazines - including a new collection of patterns from Kim Hargreaves - are gracing our shelves, too!

To celebrate our 3rd Anniversary, we invite you to stop by the store next Saturday, January 3rd.   Needless to say, we have more than 3 surprises up our hand knitted sleeves, beginning with  A SPECIAL 10% OFF STOREWIDE SALE *  (If you wear something you made from yarn you purchased at KC - or bring us a picture to keep -  we'll even throw in a little extra surprise.)

The fun starts at 11. So come on by, say hello and let us thank you in person.    In the meantime, please check out our free pattern page to see 3 new offerings!

Warmest thoughts for a happy & healthy 2009!

Pearl Chin & Everyone at Knitty City!

It's the Holidays &

'tis the season

#12

You know what that means.  The store is abuzz with projects, ideas and, thanks to our decoration contest, holiday inspiration.  If you're planning on entering, we need to remind you that there's only 1 week left to get your entries into the store. Don't forget - There are 3 prizes being offered and all involve gift certificates for KC!   Now that we're open on Tuesdays (up til Christmas), you can find us 7 days a week! As usual, we'll be open on Wednesdays & Thursdays until 8 PM.

YARN NEWS!

It just keeps rolling in - the yarn, I mean.  In addition to new shipments of our old faves,  including Malabrigo's ever popular sock yarn, we are delighted to welcome a new line of their Merino/Silk yarn in colors that have to be seen to be appreciated.  Also new:  Punta del Este's Markicash a lovely blend of merino and cashmere, most reasonably priced.  Nature's Palette has developed a line of thick/thin yarn that, true to their name, is rich in color as well as texture.  The same goes for their incredible Tussah Silk - a yarn that might be just perfect for a home decor project - home decoration being one of the driving retail forces these days.  Nothing like a little cozy, stay-at-home time during these wintery days so you might want to think about making  your "nest" as warm and welcoming as possible.

If you're a sock maven, please be aware of our   wonderful new line of Cascade sock yarn .  It comes in clear, bright colors.  We're also carrying another new yarn from Cascade, called GreenlandBe sure to ask one of us about it.

As usual, the talented,  Maxine Levenson, will be conducting her beginner class, and Pam Ness will be teaching crochet basics - please be sure to check our class list or call the store for dates.

New Class addition:  Betty will be doing a special one skein workshop for the best selling "Luxury Yarn One Skein Wonders", in which one of her patterns is featured.  Workshops are scheduled for the next 2 Thursday evenings, from 6-8 PM.  This is a marvelous opportunity to knock out a few last   minute special gifts.  Workshop cost is $15.00/session.

Magazines, Books

The new Interweave is in as is the latest issue of Selvedge.  In addition to the one skein books, Boutique Knits, the jazzy little book by Laura Irwin, is flying off our shelves.

I'll probably be back before the end of the month, but in the meantime, have a peaceful and safe Holiday season.  Keep knitting and crocheting and, most importantly,   keep smiling.  Change is upon us and with the help of our needles, our yarns and one another,  we are looking forward to a healthy and positive New Year.

NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

#11

I'm back from Vegas, and you know what they say:  "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." Truth is that not all that much happened, but I did have a good time. I'm no gambler, but it's a fun city and spending time with friends and family is always time well spent. The best part of coming back to NY, late on Friday, was coming into the store early on Saturday.  So good to see the staff and customers that make coming to work a lot of fun. Even though I was only gone for 6 days, a lot of yarns came in - much of it restock of your favorite yarns.  We're also patiently waiting for yarn from Madeline Tosh, which is a new line of yarns that I know you'll find exciting, as well as beautiful. Dream in Color's Smooshy sock yarn is on order and expected any day now.

We're really, really looking forward to the Alchemy Show.  In fact, we're so excited about having the owners/designers visit us, that we're keeping the store open, extra late, on Friday, November 14th and offering a 10% discount on all Alchemy yarns for the entire month of November. Don't forget to stop in and meet the creative Alchemy  owners and designers from 6-8 PM, and get their take on color and style.

Judith Durant's new book, "101 Luxury Yarn One Skein Wonders" is selling as fast as hot cakes. It contains a lovely collection of unique patterns, including one from Betty Balcomb, our resident sock wizard (page 81). We're happy to announce that we'll be welcoming Judith to the store on Thursday, November 20th, from 6-8 PM. Judith will be signing books, and I know that Betty will also be glad to sign her pattern, so don't forget to come on in that evening.

On Saturday,  November 29th, we will be hosting yet another event when Marie Connelly stops by the store (from 1-3PM) to sign and discuss her book, "The Expectant Knitter".

Classes/Workshops

Please check our classes page to see an update on the newest workshops and learning events at the store.

New Books

We receive automatic shipments of the newest releases on the knitting and crochet front. As a result and since it's fall, the books are just pouring in along with the newest issues of Vogue (Holiday), Interweave's Holiday Gift Guide and Rebecca.  Aryn is getting the books out and up so fast, that I cannot keep up.  You have to come by and take a look at some of them to fully appreciate the variety and quantity in our library. Jill Eaton's new "Pipsqueak Knits" kid's book features fast knit chunky yarns that insure delivery in time for the Holiday.

Habu's book, detailing their elegant patterns, is now available at Knitty City.  Their wonderful line of yarns (some of which we carry) is available through the Habu Studio - see  www.habutextiles.com for details on their locale and studio hours.

When it comes to books, I think it's safe to say that we have one of the finest knitting and crochet  book libraries in the city - if not the largest.

Another Reminder or two.....

Don't forget about our first ever Holiday Deocration Contest - see my October posting for details.  We can't wait to display the entrants.  Also, guess what January brings?  Our third Anniversary Party!  Can you believe that we'll be 3 years old?

We have already begun the planning - so  stay tuned for a lot more in the way of details!

A FEW REMINDERS

Well, I'm off to Las Vegas!  No, I'm not much of a bettor, but my family has all convened there for a little holiday - and I am out of the store this week.  But out of sight, is not out of mind, so I'll be checking in daily.  In the meantime, the usual assortment are  on-hand to assist you. Before I left, however, I needed to remind you of a few things:

1.  Alchemy Show - November l4th, a Friday, we will be privileged to have on hand the owners and creative geniuses behind the Alchemy Yarn story.  So special are these lovely yarns, that we have decided to keep the store open late - from 6-8 pm so that you can meet the owners  and enjoy their beautiful yarns and the designs that have been created for them. (A few world-class  designers shop  KC just for the color inspiration that comes from this yarn's incredible palette.)   Please DO NOT FORGET TO mark you calendar for Friday, November l4th, from 6-8 pm here at KC.

2.  Another Nicky Epstein Show?  - Unbelievable is the word for the prolific Nicky.  For the next two weeks, from 10/24 until 11/7, we are proud to feature the hand knit designs from Nicky's newest book, "Knitting on Top of the World". This woman's output is as impressive as her conintual inspiration.  Pls. come on by and check out the designs and the book.

3.  DO NOT FORGET about our Holiday Design Contest.  Pls. read below for further details.  We look forward to seeing your take on Holiday 2009.

Well, that's it for now.  The plane is waiting and Arvin in honking outside - Time to go, but not for long.  Wish me luck and come on by.  After Thanksgiving, we'll be open 7 days a week!

You know I can't stay away for long.  This time, it's because I'm excited about a new idea we have for the store.  With the cooler months bearing down and the cold news on the national front keeping pace, we decided that we needed to warm things up here at Knitty City.  So, we're beginning a new tradition -- one that we hope will become an annual one:  Holiday Decorations for the Store.  Here's how we envision it working:  You bring in your favorite holiday or seasonal decoration and we showcase it in our year end  window or place it in the store - space permitting. At the end, a panel will assess all entries and we will  award 3 prizes.  Here are the rules/regulations that we have developed:

  • All entries must be knitted or crocheted.
  • Maximum size: 1' x 1' x 1'; one entry per person.
  • Any/all ideas welcome: stockings, tiny sweaters, dreidels, stars, menorahs, trees - you decide!
  • All entries must be marked with the artist's name and phone number.  We will assign a number to each.  All entries  will be  judged by  their number to insure anonymity with  our independent and unbiased panel of judges.
  • Contest deadline: December 1st
  • Three prizes will be awarded: First Place: $50 gift certificate; Second Place: $25.00 certificate; Third Place: $10.00 certificate
  • No employees are permitted to enter.
  • All entries must be retrieved by January 6th.

FALL FOR YARN

It might not feel like it since the temperature is rather high today, but the UPS man sure knows it's fall.  The dramatic point of our day is watching him maneuver the large stack of packages through our front door.  We have shipments arriving daily from some of our favorite suppliers. See below - for a partial listing.

Speaking of front doors, you may notice that there's some work going on outside the front of the store. Our building permit finally came through and we're getting ready to put up our new awning and banner.  We're very excited and hope you'll like the look as much as we do.

New Yarns from Rowan!

We love being able to offer this great brand to our customers.  So, we've ordered a few more lines from the wonderful world of Rowan.  Next time you're in, please be sure to check out Cocoon, Felted Tweed, Pure Life Wool, and Colorscape - the last on the list being  a new yarn in colors from Kaffe Fassett.  We have instruction  books to match, as well as the new 30th Anniversary edition of Rowan #44.  Like  the other Rowan bi-annual numbered editions, this one qualifies as a coffee table book.  We anticipate selling it out quickly so if you want to get it right way you have to come in right away.

More Fassett colored Reggia sock yarn is now on hand  for the sock-istas among us and we look forward to October when we'll be launching "Soctoberfest" at Knitty City - more information to follow mid-month.

Over the summer, we began to stock a new yarn called Brooklyn Handspun, created by a talented artisan on the knitting scene in one of the coolest boroughs on the planet.   We've just received another batch, and since this stuff tends to go quickly, we suggest......well, you know.

Jill Eaton (of the fabulous Minnow Knits designs) has a wonderful new yarn, Minnow Merino, on the market.  This worsted weight yarn knits up quickly (size 8-9 US) in  the bright colors that kids respond to so well, and it has the easy care attributes that those who knit for kids appreciate.

On the knitting accessories  front, we have  received some of the most delightful  bags and totes that we could ever hope to present to you. The variety runs  from treated oilcloth (butterflies and birds, oh my!)  to beautiful silks, in a price range that will suit just about everyone.  Our usual selection of knitting needles continues to grow,  and we are  now carrying  the "I Love Knitting" needles that are so well-priced and charmingly declarative.

September 25th! for  Stitch 'n Pitch!

The special Stitch 'n Pitch gift bags are in!  Every person who buys a Stitch 'n Pitch ticket gets a free gift bag filled with oodles of knitting goods.  We've already sold over 50 tickets -- so hurry on in and buy yours today!

September Sale Yarns

September's special sale yarn is Cascade's Sierra.  For the month of September, we are giving 10% off on this popular wool/cotton blend.  It's  a terrific worsted weight cotton/merino blend that is machine washable and dryable on a low heat.  That means perfect for babies and the gifts you love to give them.

Please be sure to check out our Sale Closet.  The discount is  steeper (25%) and the sale stash is always sprouting new additions.

Well, that's it for the moment.  I've got to run.  Glenn (our UPS guy) is at the door  and he's looking rather frantic behind a new stack of boxes.

Cheers & Happy Knitting

Because we know it's not unusual to find good knitters and good cookies in the same room, we were not surprised when one of our most committed  knitters turned up at the store with this recipe for her favorite cookies.   Any/all candidate reference in the title came with the recipe.  We may be passionate, but at KC our  philosophy is truly non-partisan. Thanks, Christine!

BARACKOLATE CHIP COOKIES

(COURTESY OF CHRISTINE LAVIN)

  • 2 c. of unbleached white flour)
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ
  • 6 oz. milk chocolate chips
  • 6 oz. white chocolate chips
  • 6 oz. bittersweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/4 cup toasted chopped pecans

Preheat the oven 375°F.

Chop the pecans up, and measure them.  Spread them on an ungreased cookie sheet and toast them for approximately 10 minutes.  They are done when you can smell them toasting – take care to not over-roast.  Set aside to cool. In a big bowl blend the softened butter, white sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla. Mix in the eggs, one at a time, by hand.

In a separate smaller bowl, mix together the white flour, wheat germ, baking soda and salt.  When that is evenly mixed, add 1/3 of that to the butter mixture, and stir ‘til all is absorbed. Add the second 1/3 of the dry ingredients, mix, then the final 1/3.  Mix til smooth.

Combine all the chips together in a separate bowl.  Alternate adding the chips and the pecans to the cookie batter, stirring as you go, until everything is blended.

On an ungreased cookie sheet, with a small spoon, lay out rows of SMALL chunky cookies, leaving enough room for the cookies to spread out a little bit.

Bake the cookies for approximately 11-12 minutes, depending on your oven.  Take them out when they are golden brown, cool them on a rack, and then SHARE them.

It's that time of year, again!

The annual "Stitch 'n Pitch" game will be held on Sept 25.  All those interested should come by the store for information and tickets.  For more details on the "Stitch 'n Pitch" event, please go to: www.stitchnpitch.com.

I have no doubt that I will be back in touch before the end of the month  - with more knitting news. There's too much happening to stay quiet for long.   In the meantime, stay calm and carry on.....with your knitting!

AUGUST 2008

FAVORITE NEW SUMMER PROJECT

One of the newest obsessions among some of our more  easily obsessed knitter-ly types is a yarn called "Seduce".   It's a Berroco yarn that  comes in some of the most heavenly colors. When knitted up in a Norah Gaughan designer top  (Flow)  from her second Berroco book , it turns into the perfect summertime project - one so wearable and so "perfect" that the Yarn Harlot (www.yarnharlot.com) wrote  about it last week.  We have just ordered more of the stuff, but, in the meantime, come on in and check it out.

YARN OF THE MONTH

Beginning this August, we have decided to try something new at Knitty City:  Each month,  we'll designate a favorite "yarn of the month" and offer a 10% discount on its purchase.  August's YOM is Rowan DK Cashsoft.  To feature this yarn, one of our customers (aka Margaret Vellard) has knitted up a sweet little sweater pattern that was featured on Knitty.com:  "Helena" by Alison Green Will.  We love it so that we put it in the window - so come on by and take a look and see if you can resist it.  We couldn't!

SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE

Talking about irresistible, Nicky Epstein is sending us the trunk show for " Crocheting on the Edge", her new book on the subject.  We're featuring it from August 11 through August l8 and we'll be doing the same for her "Signature Scarves" book on October 11 though the l8th.

SUMMERTIME BABIES

Springtime's babies are growing by leaps and bounds and lots of them are showing up at Knitty City.  In celebration of all this new life, this August, KC is conducting a series of classes and workshops that celebrate kids and our love of them.  For detailed information go to the class section of this newsletter to find out more about our baby-related toy-making classes, our Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise knit-along, and Maxine Levinson's classes for new (and not so new) knitters.  Check out the calendar site, as well.

PUBLIC SERVICE IS FUN

(Especially when it concerns knitting)

Last week a favorite knitterly-type stopped by to let us know about The Riverside Church Knitter & Crocheter Group and its mission to sponsor charity knitting Projects.  Here are the details:  Every Saturday, from 11 AM-2 PM, the  free  to join  knitting circle will be turning out projects, all of which will be donated.  The  yarn has been donated so all you need to do is bring your good spirits and nimble fingers. For more information, as well as the exact address on Claremont Avenue,  call Adeline Tegnazian @ 212.781.9491.

Tote that Bag!

As our customers and friends would, no doubt agree, there is nothing quite as satisfying to the spirit, if not the wallet, as the perfect purse or tote.  So when I ran into more than one knitter who had taken on the noble challenge  of purse design through knitting or crochet, I decided we had to make a month out of it...and what better time than the month of July?  (After all, organization and "toting" is called for more than ever when one is off on weekend jaunts or extended forays.)

So, in July, in addition to some unique classes (see below),  we are offering a 25% discount on each and every handbag (knitting related or otherwise) in the store, and we are deducting 20% from the cost of all purse  handles and purse patterns.

Here's the low-down on our uplifting summer classes:               Thurs, July 10, 6-8 PM - Mosaic Masterpieces
Purse design presents a unique opportunity to highlight the beauty of mosaic knitting, aka slip stitch knitting. This very easy-to-do/learn technique results in a two color effect that is striking. Taught by Betty Balcomb, this workshop/class promises to be a fun exercise in a type of knitting that translates well into other designs. $50

Wed. July 16 & 30, 6-8 PM - Knit (and felt) a Noni Bag Join Diane as she shows you how to knit and felt a bag from the terrific designer of the Noni patterns.  You will have more than one pattern to choose from and with all the Cascade 220 colors we have on hand, you can let your imaginative side run wild.  Diane has made a few already so her knowledge of the ins/outs of bag knitting and felting is truly dyed-in-the wool (sorry!). You might wish to stop by the store beforehand so that you can take a look at the many patterns on hand. $50/session; $85 for both

Thurs, July 17,24,31, 6-8 PM - To Market, To Market!   As any informed person knows, it makes sense to tote along your own tote when shopping. Join Aryn Morse in a market tote knit-a-long  as she shows you how to knit up the perfect string-along market bag - one that folds down easily and expands to suit the need when the time comes. $10/session.

Sun, July 20, 1-4pm - Crescent-Shaped Lace Purse with Beads
For sheer, flirty femininity, you cannot beat a design by Lisa Daehlin.  Long one of our favorite lace knit and design specialists, she is also a prodigious designer of purses. Using a pattern designed by the instructor, create a beautiful knitted purse with beads and lace as embellishment. Skills covered include very basic lace knitting, 3-needle bind-off, picot hem and knitting with beads. Note: this design can be worked in varying levels of difficulty and is appropriate for beginning and more advanced knitters. $85

Sat, July 26, 1-4 PM - Finish that Bag with Karen
Bradunas
Now that you have finished your bag, you need to finish it off in a functional and professional looking manner, right?  Well, here's the woman that can show you how and teach you to have fun in the process.  This class will literally show you the ins and outs of creating a functional and professionally finished bag or purse. If you have your own lining fabric , you can bring it in or I have a lot of silk kimono fabrics, a piece of which can be purchased at $5.00 per piece.  $75

New addition to our roster of classes:

Sat, July 19, 3-5 PM - Learn to Read a Pattern with Maxine Levinson This basic, but-oh-so-important class has been requested so many times that we just had to create it. Join Maxine and learn the language of the pattern and pick up some neat tips and tricks that will de-mystify the process - all in 2 hours. $25

New Yarns:  As many of your already know, we're just back from TNNA - the biannual conference and buying show for yarn store manufacturers and retailers. While there, we scored some new yarns that have to be seen (and touched) to be appreciated.  Next time you're in the store, please check out some of the following newcomers:  Blue Heron, JojoLand, Manos Del Uraguay, and Pagewood Farms!

New Patterns: We also were fortunate enough to find a good source for some amazing new Japanese books. Elegantly styled and beautifully photographed, the schematics are highly readable and easy to decipher with a little help from your friends at Knitty City. In fact, we would like to put together another class in reading Japanese style patterns, so if there's anyone out there who feels she/he is qualified to teach, we'd love to meet you.

I'll be back soon, but in the meantime, have a Happy 4th of July & remember, we are taking the day off, too. See you soon.

Looking for Inspiration this Month?

Recently, we were fortunate enough to rediscover a source for great ideas:  The NY Public Library and Jessica Pigza.  Both the library and Jessica are filled to the brim with  a treasure trove of information on all things craft related. We know because we benefited by attending a seminar held at the 42nd St. branch.  In fact, we so enjoyed ourselves that we asked Jessica to come to Knitty City to demonstrate how the Library can help knitters, crocheters (and other craft fans)  source great books, patterns, magazines and ideas  from all over the world - vintage included!  She'll be with us on Saturday, June 21, from 1-2 PM - and a little beyond, if needed, to show us how easy it is to investigate at the library and, in some cases, from the comfort of your own home.    In the meantime, here's a link to her blog at the library so you can get a taste of her wide range of knowledge: http://www.nypl.org/blogs/jessica-pigza.

LACE BLOOMS @ KC

(Newsletter # 6)

June is just around the corner, and, with that, our thoughts are turning to love.  At Knitty City, that love includes lace - one of the most beautiful -- and popular forms of knitting and crochet.   In honor of the interest of our favorite knit and crochet enthusiasts (you!), we are having a series of events that will deepen your knowledge and experience of the joy of lace. So, hold on to your needles and come along for a ride on the Knitty City lace trail.

A Taste of Lace!

Start the June adventure off by becoming acquainted with some of the different lace yarns on the market. Get a "taste of lace" with a lace yarn sampling on Saturday, June 14th, from 3-5 PM. Each participant will receive a sampling of at least 6 different lace yarns -- enough to make a generous swatch of each. We will also be providing information about yarns and project suggestions for new and advanced lace knitters. It’s a great way to find out what appeals to you and feels good. It’s also a nice way to gather with like-minded "lacies" and enjoy a shared passion. Note: As a special treat just for our yarn tasting guests, we will be offering 10% off any of the yarns purchased that day. The fee for the tasting is $25. Please sign up early because seating is limited.

LACE DESIGNERS WE KNOW AND LOVE

Two of the best, Evelyn Clark and Myrna Stahman, have inspired us to create a series of Lace Knit-a-Longs.

Beginning Wednesday, June 4, from 6-8 PM, we will be exploring Ms. Clark's  "Knitting Lace Triangles" one of the best books on the market on the subject of designing and knitting lace. The cost is $12.00/class or $40.00 for the 4 class knit-a-longs.  Hosted by Betty Balcomb, our  lace knitter extraordinaire.  (For a review of Knitting Lace Triangles go to www.knittersreview.com and click on Books.)

On Thursday, June 5, from 6-8 PM, we will be experiencing Myrna Stahman's take on lace via her book, "Lace Shawls and Scarves" .  This knit-a-long will concentrate on this incredible  designer's love of such iconic masterworks as the Faroese Shawl and the Seamen's Scarf.  Cost is the same and the instructor is Betty Balcomb.

Note:  Samples of both the Evelyn Clark and Myrna Stahman garments are on display at Knitty City. Come in anytime to take a look  and sign up for the knit-a-longs.

Additional Lace Classes

Join designer, Lisa Daehlin, as she examines seemingly complex lace patterns and shows you how to simplify and understand them. You will learn to read written and charted patterns Sign up for either/both of these classes.  One is not required for the other, but you’ll learn a lot about the structure and resulting beauty of lace if you take both!  Each class is $75.00 or $125.00 for both.

#1  Knitting a Lace Sampler

Learn various lace patterns using yarn-over increases that are paired with decreases to create a rectangular lace sampler which could be used as a scarf/pillow/shawl.  PREREQUISITE: Know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind-off.

Events & "Regular" Stuff:

As usual, we'll be conducting our monthly Book club on the first Thursday of the month (May 1st) from 6-8 PM.  Stop by the store and find out what we'll be discussing.  All are welcome.

...and, don't forget about our Habu Textiles workshop on April 26. There are  only a few spots left in the two workshops scheduled for that date.  We should have samples of the kits in the store by April 23rd, so stop by and check out the beautiful and unique Habu Textiles designs.  Orders will be taken on the day of the workshop, and Takako will be demonstrating and explaining the techniques that make their patterns and their yarns like no other.  (See below for additional information on this workshop.)

Did you know that Knitty City is now on Facebook and Ravelry?

APRIL 1st IS  JUST AROUND THE CORNER....
BUT IT STILL FEELS LIKE MARCH TO US AND...

......given the coolness of the last few  weekends, it's non too late for our latest shipment of goods: MALABRIGO!   We have just received a long awaited, large order of one of our most popular  yarns, and this time we have it in 3  weights:   2 types and colors of a luscious thick/thin bulky, worsted, and a selection of lace weights that will set your creative hearts aflutter.  It came in on Thursday, and it began selling right out of the box.  In fact, we have not even had time to put it on the shelf - or to find a shelf to put it on.  Talking about lack of shelf space, you simply have to see our collection of books and magazines.  The latest Sasha Kagan, the brightest new Louisa Harding,  the newest Debbie Bliss, a wealth of Rowan designer books (with yarns to match)  plus  books on designing your own knits, creative crochet and patterns galore.

                                         New Workshop

In addition to new stock, we are thrilled to be able to announce a new kind of workshop.  Habu Textiles has graciously agreed to send us  a trunk show of their fascinating garments and conduct a workshop on the reading of  their unique and beautiful patterns and kits.  Workshops will be from 12-1 and 3-4 and, at present, we need to limit each workshop to no more than 10 people.  We will be featuring the kits in the store at least 1 week prior to the workshops on April 26 and more information will be sent as the date approaches.  At present, and due to the graciousness of the Habu Textile Company, we are able to offer this  worthwhile workshop for no charge, but we do ask that sign ups occur as soon as possible.  Please call at your first opportunity if you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

                              New Sock Workshop

Knitty City’s own “Sock Lady” (Betty Balcomb) has re-invented her sock lessons, breaking into two separate classes for Toe-Up and Cuff-Down. Everyone will learn to knit on double-pointed needles; magic loop (socks on circular needles) will also be demonstrated in both classes. Each class has a charge of $90.00 (2 lessons each) or $150 if both classes are taken.   Supplies: Size 3 DPNs and 100g of sock yarn.

Toe Up: Thursdays, 4/3 + 4/17, 6-8 pm
Cuff Down: Thursdays, 4/10 + 4/24, 6-8 pm

I will be back shortly....but I wanted to keep you up to date on the very latest.  Look for another posting, later in the week!

                                 WILL IT EVER STOP?

                                   I SURE HOPE NOT!

The good news keeps on coming, compelling me to keep on posting, and  I simply had to bring my customers (and readers) up to date on the newest.  We now have Koigu in stock.    Well, we will on Wednesday.  Arvin and I are going to pick it up tonight.  It's a long story, but after what seems like years of waiting (OK, it's only been 2), we're going to have some of the world's favorite yarn on hand.  Be sure to come  by as soon as possible since you know how it is with us yarnies, and  Koigu is known to have wings and fly right out of the stores that stock it.  For an updated list of the yarns that Knitty City stocks, please click on the "Our Yarns" button.

While I'm here, I may as well keep on going and fill you in on the latest.  Every week seems to bring a new surprise.  On Saturday, we hosted the NYC Crochet Guild and their workshop on the Coral Reef Project.  (Scroll down to find the link for more information on this very worthy project.)  All this week, KC is serving as the drop off point for people who are making contributions to the Coral Reef exhibit.  Pick up will be on Friday, so if you're involved or wish to see examples of work, this is the week to come on over.  We thank Barbara Van Elsen   for her contribution to KC's Saturday activities.  It was great fun to see the work and the energy of the crochet group was a welcome addition to the day's activities.  So much so, that we have decided to declare May "Crochet Month" at KC.  Our May window and our class list will reflect that so keep on the lookout for more information as the time approaches.

Some timely reminders:

Lisa Daehlin's class on Crochet Squares (and beyond) will be held this weekend on Saturday, MARCH 15, from 3-6 PM.  It's filling up fast, so call or come in if you are interested.  According to the Editor of Crochet Today Magazine, grannies are in and they're not just square.

Cheryl Schaefer, the brain and artist behind the splendid Schaefer yarn brand, will be in the store on Saturday, March 22, from 12-2PM.  She will be discussing her yarns, her philosophy and the story behind her naming of her yarns.  Pls. join us and meet this marvelous spirit on that day.

Because of Cheryl's appearance, we have shifted the time for Ron Bloom's class on Saturday, March 22,  from 3 to 4 pm.  It is now scheduled for 4-6.

We are also trying to gauge interest in conducting a class on knitting for babies and toddlers.  Amy Bahrt, author of "Creature Comforts", one of our best selling "knitwear for babies" books, has got time on her schedule for a baby blanket workshop.    In addition to "Creature Comforts", Amy's magical  work has been published in numerous magazines and in the Vogue Knitting on the Go series.  Write or drop by to see samples of her 3 dimensional blankets and sign up.  Her blanket workshop will assist you in picking out the right materials, color selection and simple techniques.

Sale Yarns

With all the new yarns coming in, we are putting even more yarn on sale.  I won't say what, but I would suggest you come by and check out our 25% off specials.  I think you'll find some great buys on hand.

                    ONCE MORE....WITH FEELING!

I just can't seem to stay away, but I have so much to say since March is shaping up to be quite the active month.  Yesterday, we had Annie Modesitt at the store for two extremely valuable workshops.  They were sold out and, from what we could see, everyone had a great time and learned a lot.  We hope to bring her back as soon as her schedule permits. We promise to give you a heads-up long before we schedule it.

In the meantime, we've just added two more workshops to our schedule.  Read on:

I Told you I'd be back soon!

MARCH - IN LIKE A LION,  OUT LIKE A ... ?

Lamb is the usual thought, but in these times of global weather confusion, who is to say? Could be "In like a lion, out like a Cashmere Goat". Any way you say it, Knitty City has you covered, from modestly priced yarn to top of the line fibers. We are now carrying some of Rowan's most popular yarns, including Kid Silk Haze! We placed an order just the other day and it has been promised for immediate delivery, so be sure to check in the store frequently so that we can serve you with an even wider  array of yarn choices. We also have a wonderful new line of knitting bags and we're up to our noses in patterns and exciting  accessories, so we promise that any trip to the store will be rewarding.

                                    Upcoming Events!

CHINESE NEW YEAR, VALENTINE'S DAY &
A SPECIAL FEBRUARY OFFER!

February 7 begins the Year of the Rat on the Chinese Calendar. The belief is that those  born in this year  tend to be forthright, generous and easy going with  everyone they care for and love.  (Turns out that rats have their good side, I guess.)  It is also believed that efforts begun during the year of the Rat tend to be successful.  So, now's the perfect time to begin a late winter project, and to help inspire you we've got a whole new assortment  of your favorite yarns, some new ones we think you'll like and a collection  of new books that makes me confident in claiming that KC  now has the largest selection of knitting books in NYC.  In addition, February promises to be an "event-ful" month as we have some exciting workshops and events.

YARNS!
Our usual inventory of Cascade yarns has been increased with the addition of some fabulous handpainted yarns in worsted and chunky weight.  We also now carry Cash Vera, their heavenly soft yarn that knits up as nicely as any cashmere-like blend on the market.  A new brand for us is Asland Trend.  They produce a tweedy worsted weight yarn that is the most interesting blend of alpaca and cotton and has a great between-season look since it comes in  colors that bridge the divide between winter and spring.  As usual our shelves are bursting with color, so come in as soon as possible and let us show you the colorful side of February.

SPECIAL OFFER
With Valentine's Day on the horizon, we thought we should do something special for our customers and the people who hold them near and dear.  So   any and all gift certificates bought between today (Feb. 1) and February 14th, will be discounted 10%.   KC will even act as cupid.  If you want to let someone know about this offer  - just send us their email address and we'll let them know about the perfect gift for the knitter in their life.  (We promise to keep all e-mails confidential, of course,)

EVENTS
On, Sunday,  February 17, we're honored to have Twain Revell join us  from 1 - 5 PM.  Twain is a nationally known artist and fashion designer who also spins her own yarns, using the fur of a large angora rabbit.  Her incredible designs are inspired by her knowledge of  African heritage  and cloth making.  Twain will be at KC to demonstrate her techniques and talk about all matters fiber, and, yes, the rabbit will be there, as well.  Pls. mark your calendars and join us for an afternoon of information and a celebration of culture.

On Tuesday, February 26th, Knitty City will be featuring special classes taught by Annie Modesitt, the knitting heretic, herself. Annie is one of the knitting world's true rock stars.  Her designs have been featured in all the major knitting magazines and she's the author of many patterns and books.  most recently, "Romantic Hand Knits".   Since this is a Tuesday offering (our normal day off), we're opening the store for students only.    Annie will be teaching her popular combination knitting technique from 2-5 and a lace knitting class from 6-9.  Our lists are filling up fast, so call, today, to sign up.  The cost is $75.00/class.  Anyone who wishes to take both classes will be offered a special rate of $125.00.  To learn more about Annie, go to www.modeknit.com.

NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER  #10

As I approach the Holiday season, I cannot help but begin to collect my  "gratitudes" even more assiduously.    First and foremost, of course, I am grateful for  friends and family.  Without the former, Knitty City would not exist - since our customers are our dear friends  and as part  of our community of craft enthusiasts, they are a big part of Knitty City's success.   The latter, family, is what makes everything possible.  So, for a moment, let me say "Thank You" again to everyone who has taken Knitty City and our staff into their lives and hearts, and to my family without whose support nothing would be possible. I and the staff of Knitty City wish each and every one of you a lovely Thanksgiving Holiday.

The past month has been distinguished by a great roster of visiting authors and designers.  Kaffe Fassett and Brandan Mabley were here on Tuesday night (We opened just for them, for 2 hours.)  The turnout was spectacular and it has been documented in the Knitty City group which is posted on Ravelry.com  (www.ravelry.com)  the new web site for the knitting community.  At present, you need to be invited to join since they are still in a "testing" phase, but get your name on the list and you will be "inducted" soon.    It's a great way to find kindred spirits in one place.  Knitty City already has 26 members on line and it's fun to see their comments and pictures.

Last Saturday, we were honored by the presence of  Eunny Jang, the new Editor of Interweave Press.  The turnout was great as was the subject matter: putting together a knitting magazine.   Again, once you gain entrance to Ravelry, you will be able to "catch up" via our picitures.

In the meantime, don't forget that we have a continually changing assortment of "Sale" Yarns.  The sale baskets contain real finds which are, at least, 25% off.  We change assortments every 2 weeks, so be sure to keep coming in to check them out.

Talk about checking out: Come on in and pick up  Kaffe's newest book, "Kaffe Knits Again".  We have a number of signed copies on hand.  It will make a terrific Holiday gift for any knitter (or would-be knitter) on your list.

GIFT REGISTRY

We are starting a new service at Knitty City - the Knitty City Gift
Restry.  It works just like any other registry:  You come in and

and create a "wish list" by filling out a card which elaborates on

things you'd like to receive - thereby creating an itemized list

which friends and family can consult when looking for the

perfect gift.  It's that simple.  So come on down, dream away

and  let those near and dear to you know that you are

"registered" at

Knitty City.

Kaffe Fassett's newest, "Kaffe Knits Again",  is now in stock and we have a veritable plethora of new stock from Berroco - including some new sock yarn.  Last week, Knitty City hosted the 25th Anniversary Party for Vogue Knitting and that was just the beginning of our Fall Season.  In the weeks to come, we'll be welcoming Eunny Jang (10/27), Kaffe Fassett (10/30), and Nicky Epstein (11/29).    Because of the popularity of these knitting personalities, it's important that we know, beforehand, how many to expect, so please call and let us know if you plan on attending.

Here's a rundown of specific dates:

Nicky Epstein - This unique one-woman designer extrordinaire has two new books on the market.  We're sharing our excitement by having her at the store on Thursday, November 29, from 6-8 PM for a signing.  Nicky loves knitters and vice-versa, so count on her to share a few tricks of the trade.

Because we know it's not unusual to find good knitters and good cookies in the same room, we were not surprised when one of our most committed  knitterly types  turned up at the store with this recipe for her favorite cookies.

For more details on the "Stitch 'n Pitch" event, please go to: www.stitchnpitch.com

...and Mason Dixon is at it, again!

Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne have done it once more.  Their first book, "Mason Dixon Knitting" was such an outstanding success that their reading and knitting public (not to mention their publisher) was begging for more.  The second Mason Dixon book ("Mason Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines")  is making its debut this fall, and they have graciously agreed to put KC on their tour.  We thought it only fitting  to help them celebrate by throwing them a little shindig.  Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 16, at 6 PM.  There will be refreshments of all kinds, beautiful samples from the book, a book signing and best of all the wonderful women of Mason Dixon Knitting.  We'll be sure to remind you again, but come early that evening since we tend to fill up fast and we anticipate a large turn out.

Read on:

Aryn has created a new class list for our advanced classes.  Pls. pick up a flyer when you are next in the store.  In addition, we are offering beginner classes, as usual, plus the  following:

Newsletter #7

July is Hot, Hot, Hot

While the 4th may have been a bit of weather buster - and coming in the middle of the week, a little weird, Knitty City is proving to be one hot spot for summer (and all season) knitters!

Let's start with our July sale news! For the next two weeks (til mid-July) all Cascade "Fixation" and all Ribbon Yarns (Giotto, Zen, Boho, to name a few!) are on sale.  Ribbon yarns have a silky texture that is perfect for shawls with lovely drape and/or the right kind of jacket or summer time shell.

Do you need me to tell you what Fixation is perfect for?  Everything!!!! Socks, baby clothes, hats, summer garb!  The neat thing about Fixation is that, depending on your needle size, it knits up in a variety of gauges.  That's because Fixation has a very small amount of elastic in its cotton content.  This elastic gives it just enough body to hold its shape but not enough to take away from the beauty of the cotton.

New yarns continue to pour in.  We're proud to be the only store in NYC to offer the beautiful Kauni yarn and we've just ordered our 3rd shipment!   Thanks to Stephanie Pearl McPhee's announcement on her well loved and read blog, The  Yarn Harlot, Knitty City is on the web-map and orders are pouring in. So hurry up and come on by!  While here, ask to see Margaret Velard's beautiful sweater in  Kauni's  Rainbow colourway.

Other new yarns well worth your notice are Punta del Este's worsted and bulky weight yarns and our newest Mountain Color's boucle - perfect choice if you're interested in making the beautiful Clapotis - the ever popular shawl from Knitty.com - another world-class knitting zine on line.  Check it out!!!!

Book Club for July - July 12 -6-8 PM: DOMINO KNITTING            Vivian Hoxbro's wonderful exercise in unique knitting constructions is being demonstrated and discussed.  Do come and bring your swatches
