This is a NYC Week

WELCOME TO SOCK-TOBER at Knitty City

Forgive us for playing with the language, but we could not help ourselves.  We're so excited about the beginning of October.  We're celebrating Fall knitting all month - beginning with the love of socks.  In honor of the little twin cuties, we've dedicated the entire month to sock yarn and we are taking 10% off on each and every one of our sock yarns - and do we have the brands:  Baah! La Jolla, Cascade Heritage and Heritage Silk,Colinette Jitterbug, Dream In Color Smooshy, Fleece Artist Casba, Frog Tree Pediboo, Koigu, Lorna’s Laces Sock, Madelinetosh Sock, Malabrigo Sock, Prism Saki, Spud & Chloe Sock, Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock, Zauberball Sock.  One of your favorites has simply got to be in this list.

You'll need your socks this week to cushion your tootsies in your walking shoes:    It's the Fourth Annual NYC Yarn Crawl, and Knitty City is oe of 10 stores participating in this yearly yarn trek through Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Each store is doing its best to attract you with neat promotional offers and sales.  For additional information, be sure to check out www.nycyarncrawl.com.  As for Knitty City, here's what we'll be doing:

In addition to the 10% off on all sock yarns, we will be doing a "weekend only offer" of 20% on all books and 20% off on special Knitty City hat and scarf kits.   It's the ideal time and place to stock up on holiday gifts - Think of what a neat gift could be made of one of our many  sock books and a skein (or two) of fabulous sock yarn.  Reminder:  Sock yarn also makes great scarf and shawl material as well as good yarn for baby items.

In addition to the sale, specials and basket raffle, we will be hosting Anna Hrachovec and her darling (if slightly scary) crew of Monsters.

Anna will be in the store on Saturday, October 6,  from 3-5 pm with a  Super-Scary display and plenty of books, so please stop by if you’re in the city and pick up a signed book from her.   This is not a formal event, so she's  just looking forward to hanging out at one of her  favorite yarn stores and chatting with knitters about knitting tiny zombies, mummy cats, and dead toasters.  Please check out the NYC Yarn Crawl

The characters from Super-Scary Mochimochi are playing a key role in this year’s crawl: they have the honor of being the must-find items for the scavenger hunt.  Every store you visit will have one of Anna's little pals somewhere on the premises.  We hope you find them all.  Instructions for how to notify the people at the Yarn Crawl can be found on the site along with a list of the prizes.  About the scary monsters:  They are really a very friendly type of scary so don't be frightened of them.  They do love it, however, if you pretend to be a little scared.  It makes them feel as if they're doing a good job for Anna - and they all love her -- so do we.  Come on and meet her on Saturday.

Knitting on Holiday

by phyllis

Knitting on Holiday

As summer approaches, the books and new magazines keep coming through the door - along with some neat little lightweight yarns.  Classic Elite's many yarns are this month's yarn of the month (10% off).  Their cottons, linen blends and lightweight offerings are ripe for the picking at that price.  The new issue of Knitty just came out on line.  For some really beautiful and portable and free patterns, be sure to visit www.knitty.com.

One of these little scarf beauties  are  simply begging to be knit up in a lovely linen or linen/cotton blend.  (Think Louet's Euro-Flax for a pure linen choice).  Another good travel accessory is socks - consider a pair of these for a little July 4th on the road project:

Again, you'll find this pattern on  the new Knitty, right here::  http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEff12/PATTlongitudinal.php    The pattern is free, and we have the yarn Zauerball - just one skein.

Staff Pick for Vacation Knitting

Maxine Levinson in KT Coyle's Linen Top

This takes just two skeins of Louet's Euroflax Linen - plenty in stock!

Report on Knitting In Public Day

The turnout at Bryant Park was pretty great. In the Knitty City area, we counted 165 people - all showing their "true colors" by knitting in public.  Take a look at a few of these shots which Pearl took  on that fun day.

This is also a good time to remind you that we'll be continuing our free knitting lessons in Bryant Park, every Tuesday.  Drop by or send a friend who might want to learn.  You'll be doing them a favor!

Bert & Dana Freed

Wed., June 27, 2012, 6-8 PM

One of our treasured  friends and store-colleagues, Dana Freed, has just - co-authored her first book, along with her mom, Bert Freed.  (Both Dana and Bert  have taught classes on bead crochet at the store, and Dana does regular workshops - see our calendar for the next.)  We are proud to celebrate the launch of their book, Bead Crochet Jewelry: An Inspired Journey Through 27 Designs (Jewelry Design) by Bert Rachel Freed and Dana Elizabeth Freed at the store on Wednesday, June 27, from 6-8 PM.  Please join us as we applaud their wonderful endeavor.   Books will be offered for sale and both Dana and Bert will be on hand to tell you all about their adventure in creating this book.

Joanna Johnson

You might remember Joanna  from her last book, "Phoebe's Sweater", a classic children's book that weaves together knitting and story-telling. Joanna and her husband-illustrationist, Eric, have followed up on Phoebe with a new book, "Phoebe's Birthday".  This time, Phoebe experiences a whole new set of adventures as she learns to swim. At the end of the story there are  a series of knitting, sewing, and quilting patterns.  Joanna is a long-time favorite of Knitty City, as are the yarns she features in her books.  Please come by on this evening and join us as we  celebrate the work of this talented couple.

 Store Pick

Essentially Feminine Knits

This new offering from Lene Holme Samsoe is creating a lot of interest and attention.  We are selling it as fast as it's being shipped in.  Please stop by and take a look at her impressive  new set of patterns.  You won't be able to stop at just one.

Well, that's it for the moment.  Be sure to keep coming by.  In July, we will be  featuring a wonderful new window, honoring our Women Vets.  We will be writing about this a little later in the month, and, as always, we'll be in touch via our newsletter.  Please take the time to check out our callendar on this site and see if any of our early summer workshops are of interest to you.  Remember, we're open 7 days a week now, including 2 "late" nights, Wed. and Thursday.

See you soon!

NEW PROFILE

As promised, we're continuing to focus on some of the iteresting (and talented) people who work in or frequent, our store.  Here's a snapshot of one of our regulars that we thought you might like to know a little better.

June Hariprashad

June learned to knit early on, thanks to a 6th Grade teacher, but she passed on the knitting for a while - her mom was a crocheter and she was not influenced by either at the time.  She was, however, intereted in the sciences.  (For what it's worth: The intrigue of fiber art is often  a common interest among scientists and mathemticians - as well as writers.)

After graduating from Bryn Mawr with a degree in Biology, June  ultimately became a Sr. Research Staff Associate at Cornell Hospital's Invitro Program.  Her work is demanding and requires sequential days and long hours, so time off is precious.  A big part of that free time is devoted to   countering the effects of an intense professional life and that's where knitting comes in.  In 2006, a friend and colleague, reintroduced her to it as an antidote to stress.    June picked up her needles and proceeded to embrace it as an art form as well as for its soothing effects.    It's a  fascinating corollary to her work that, in big part, many of June's projects involve   creating miniature knits --  ones with the most exacting details.  Here are a few examples of some of her work from the past 6 years:

See that Heart Ornament on the left?  June submitted to in a Valentine Day Contest that Interweave was running in Piecework Magazine and won an Honorable Mention award for it.  We're especially smitten with the KC Project bag,on the right.  It's slightly felted and captures our colors exactly.  From time to time, you will see June's work exhibited in our front window.  She's graciously allowed us to use her miniatures as props and a few years back, she contributed more than one gorgeous felted Apple to the Second NYC Yarn Crawl.  Take a look at these beautites:

Grey Heart Apple  Fair Isle Apple Fall Apple

June graciously credits Knitty City for feeling like a "home away from home".  She says the friends she has made there and the sense of community have gone a long way toward fostering her growth as a knitter and her inspirations as a designer.  For our part, we are proud to count her as a well loved customer and  a part of our world.

Goings On in NYC

We live in the best city in the world, and one of the reasons it is so is because of the various cultural offerings that are available.  Knitty City is a big supporter of the arts, so from time to time, we post things on this site that we think might be of interest.  Here's one that just popped in over the transom:

FREE FRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC @ THE NY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

APRIL 27 THROUGH JUNE 1

170 CPW (AT 77 TH ST.)

for further information, see:  www.nyhistory.org

_______________________________________

We like to leave you with some iinspiration, so we've been asking  our creative staff members if they can let us know what they're currently working on.  Susie Dippel has contributed the following "On the Needles" recommendation:

Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (TML)
It's superwash, the colors shine & glisten & it's a terrific value for a single ply fingering weight yarn. Imagine a shawl for less than $40.  TML earns these kudos from me due to its versatility. Elbow length gloves, crocheted cardigans and knitted sweaters, are among the items customers have shown us. I've used TML twice 1- the Serena Shawl (pattern from Fairmont Fibers) and Sophie the Bunny (by Ysolda Teague).

Well, that's it for the moment.  We'll be back soon with more news.  Please look for our newsletter, which also comes out twice a month.  If you're not signed up for it, you can do so by emailing Zach (zach@knittycity.com) and asking to be put on our mail list.
