Anyone who knows us, knows our love for this city - no matter what the season. We admit that our hearts beat a bit faster in the winter since it gives us chance to share our love of making warm and cozy garments. It also gives us a chance to admire those made by our customers - so do share with us by sending pictures of how you're coping with this blast of arctic air - knit wise. (Pets, too, of course.)
We also love the winter in NY since it's a time for community. We hope you'll be part of our community by attending some of our upcoming January events: First off, Lisa Daehlin, renowned knitter, designer, artist (musical as well as fiber) will be conducting another of her popular series of classes. Beginning this Saturday, Jan.11,from1-3 pm, she'll be teaching the first of two classes. Color,Texture and Form is first up, followed by a class on Saturday, January 25th, 1-3 pm, on Tunisian Crochet. For more details, be sure to visit her explanatory blog at http://lisadaehlin.wordpress.com Fee: $40.00 per class.
Talking community, don't forget that VK Live is happening next weekend, January 17, 18 and 19 at the Marriott Marquis Time Square (1535 Broadway (between 45th and 46th Street). Knitty City will, once again, be the Author Signing hub. We're located at Booths 712 and 714, right next to Rowan's Booths, 708 and 710. Apart from selling our usual selection of fabulous yarns (think Madeline Tosh, Malabrigo and lots more) we'll be saying hello to aulthors such as Clara Parkes (The Yarn Whisperer), Nicky Epstein, and Sally Melville. So come by, say hello, meet an author and be happy!
We are willing to bet that anyone who has made one of Martina Behm's, wonderful "leftie" shawls knows what it is to be happy with a pattern. We're happy to announce that she'll be at Knitty City on Monday, January 20, from 6-8 PM. She'll be bringing lots of examples of her work, including her own versions of Leftie and Matchmaker - and that's just a few - she promises to bring a lot. So put on your own leftie, or just come and meet this valued talent on January 20th. We can't wait to see her in person.
Every year the annual NYS Sheep & Wool Festival attracts thousands of die-hard yarn and nature lovers. To celebrate this annual festival of community, Ysolda Teague brought together eleven designer friends, including Gudrun Johnston, Amy Herzog and Mary Jane Mucklestone, to share the sweaters they would wear to Rhinebeck, NY, the city in which the the event is held. Shot on location at the festival, the book is beautifully inspiring, filled with the rich colours and textures of autumn in Upstate New York. Clear patterns in Ysolda’s signature style are included for each design so that you, too, can make your own special Rhinebeck sweater.
Also in this week are the Spring issue of Interweve Knits (Spring???? that's right) as well as the late Winter Vogue Knitting. Buy both. You could knit the gorgeous scarf on Vogue's cover and start to plan what you will be wearing come warmer times. How cool is it that knitting and crochet are year round activities? This week, Pearl is visiting San Diego and is at the trade show at The National Needle Arts Association, where she's considering the warmer weather yarns.
Well, that's it, but only for the moment. We'll be back via our newsletter or on this blog. Also be sure to catch us on FB, Ravelry (join our group) and don't forget to come see us at VK Live next weekend.
Some of us will go to any length to Get in the Spirit!
Not that we have much lack of spirit at Knitty City!! That spirit is strong and we sure have been active. Everyone - and we mean everyone - seems to have caught the knitting, crochet and spinning spirit. We have had to reorder all our top selling yarns - not that we're complaining, mind you! We have met seen so many cool people - old friends and new! Just last week, Vickie Howell, the host of Knitting Daily TV and the designer/contributor to magazines such as Knit Simple stopped in to visit.
Some of the yarns that we're happy to see are new shipments of Madeline Tosh's Vintage, Pashmina, Merino Light and Merino dk. All in her gorgeous signature colors - the ones that everyone love! New colors are in from Julie Asselin in the lines we carry. Malabrigo's roving has also gladdened our doorway once again. Some are knitting with it. Some are spinning it - Both are creating beautiful projects. Another bulky (think quick knit) yarn that we have in is Cascade's Magnum - You can make a hat in a night with Magnum. Here's an appropriate seasonal pattern for you. You can find this pattern, as well as a whole bunch of other free Magnum patterns, here: :http://www.cascadeyarns.com/patterns_magnum.asp
Holiday Event at Knitty City
Monday, Dec. 23, 6-7 PM
We hope to see you there!
Oh....One More Thing.....
Knitty City is turning 8 this January! Come help us celebrate on Sat., Jan. 4.
Have a piece of cake on us!
Here's why: First of all, the Yarn of the Month is Blue Sky Alpacas, which includes the Spud & Chloe yarns as well. All BSA yarns and patterns are 10% off this month. Anyone who has knit with their yarns, knows what a pleasure it is. Look for their Metalico and Alpaca Silk if you want to be impressed, and Royal Petites are the perfect choice if you're knitting for a winter baby.
Here are a couple of new ones well worth the talk:
Julie Asselin's newest addition to her line comes in 6 colors.
Subtle sparkle mixed with luscious yarn results in Holiday Magic.
We're very happy to be able to carry this special yarn from Tibet, which is spun from Yak down. Yak down is warmer than cashmere and credited with being softer and hypo-allergenic as well.
"Rewya" (which means "hope" in the Tibetan language) yarns are the result of a cooperative of people who live in Tibet. Profits from the sale of this yarn are reinvested directly into the community - thus making life a little easier and helping to preserve the traditions of Tibet.
