Good Golly! It's a Sale @ Knitty City

06/28/2013 by phyllis

Spring was aptly named this year since springs were overflowing along with just about everything else   in the city.
Knitty City even had its own Spring - winding its way through our basement.
Not to worry, however!  Thanks to our  intrepid team, we didn't miss a beat, but we did decide it was a good time for a make-overl
So, in anticipation of our renovation, beginning July 14th and running through July 28th, when we will be closed for business,
Knitty City is throwing a humdinger of a sale!

The above graphic explains it all, but if you have any questions, just pop in over the weekend.
We bet you won't be able to resist the sale.
Even if you have your own river of yarn already, we'll  be glad to see you and say Hi!

And,  just in case you happen to come see us, we invite you to scope out our newest addition from Neighborhood Yarns.

This is "Loft", a sumptuous blend of mohair and silk that coordinates beautifully with any of Neighborhood's  wool yarn colors.

Hey, it can't hurt to just look, right?

Please remember, Knitty City will be closed on July 4th.
Happy Independence Day everyone!.

Knitting Soars High - Even in the Heat

06/03/2013 by phyllis

KNITTING SOARS HIGH!

Well, the temperature/humidity index  may have soared last week, but it doesn't mean that your knitting has to plummet.  It's the perfect time to begin your vacational (is there such a word?) knitting plans.   We suggest you start with one of the  newest additions to our impressive inventory of yarns:

neighborhoodfiberco

This lovely line of yarn comes in a variety of weights (worsted, sport & fingering) and wondrous colors.  To top it off, it's also our Yarn of the Month (YOM) and is 10% off all month. Here's a quick look at  just a few of their colors.  You have to pop in to get a real sense of the marvelous assortment and variety of colors we have on hand....and, on Saturday, JUNE 8, please come to the store and meet Karida Collins, Neighborhood Fiber Co. owner.  She'll be discussing the trunk show of knits that we'll have in the store. We look forward to sharing her enthusiasm for all things knit and beautiful with all of you.

Join us as we, once again, celibrate the craft and the people who make knitting the  joy it is for so many. We'll be meeting in Bryant Park, just like last year - near the statue of Gertrude Stein.  This year, we will be setting up tables for the Crochet Guild and Big Apple; if you'd like to have a group there, we'd be happy to set up a few more.  Just let us know ASAP.

The following Tuesday, June l8, from 1:30-3:00 PM, we  begin our annual Learn to Knit Meet-Ups in Bryant Park.  Every Tuesday, throughout the summer months,  we teach the craft to all who wish to learn. We supply yarn and needles - both of which need to be returned to us at lesson's end.  (If you already know how to knit, bring along your current project and  hang  out with us.)   We will be  making squares for blankets for this year's recipients:  Blankets of Love.  This volunteer effort was organized to create blankets as gifts for young people who are transitioning out of foster care and into mainstream living.  Donated squares are crocheted into wonderful blankets like this:

PS:  If you have any yarn you would like to donate, the organization has told us they'd be pleased to take any sport weight washable wool or wool blends. They use it for crocheting together  the many squares they collect for this worthy effort.  Let us know and we'll be glad to tell you how to do it!

Exciting New Books

Spring time normally sees the arrival of new books since the designers and publishers like to give us new "grist for our knitting mills" for  summertime projects and fall planning.  This spring was no exception and here are the newest books just in:

East Coast knitwear designer, Melissa Wehrle, has created a collection that perfectly reflects the rhythm  of city life. From a chunky cabled sweater and hat to a beautiful tunic and gossamer cardigan, Melissa's designs are shaped, expertly finished, and ready to be shown off on the street. They feature a variety of construction and finishing techniques and are classic - like the city they appear in!

Nicky does it again - only this time it's for the dolls we all love.  She  has created 25 playful, fashion  patterns for 18-inch dolls. The enchanting pieces  include everything from tops and pants to dresses skirts, and coats—even a lacy princess gown! Adorable accessories (hats, headbands, scarves, purses, mitts, and socks) complete this cutest-ever wardrobe - all by Nicky.  Note to the practical among us:  Not only are they adorable, they are perfect stash busters, as well. Come over to the store, today and pick this special little book up - we expect to sell out fast!

You don't need us to tell you that crochet has made its way back onto the fashion scene in a huge way and is comfortable for both day and night wear.  Award-winning designer Doris Chan helps you get more out of crochet with these contemporary and endlessly adaptable patterns that work with a variety of different looks, personal styles, and body shapes. Doris's style aesthetic is as modern  as her ideas. This book is a stunner!

Well, that's about it for the moment - but only for the moment.  We'll be posting on our usual social media and there's always our newsletter, which will be coming out next week.  To sign up, go to www.knittycity.com - or, better yet, just drop by the store, say hi to one of us and sign up there.  We're always happy to see you.

Don't Get Taxed!

04/15/2013 by phyllis

KNITTY CITY WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU:

RELAXING!

Just because it's April l5th, doesn't mean it needs to be stressful.  Many knitters, organized souls that they are,  have probably taken care of the pesky business of taxes and almost all  will tell you that the very smartest and best way to relax is to make something!  That's why this blog - and Knitty City - is here.  To  tell you about, some of the  things we have on hand to help you do just that.

NEW YARNS @ KNITTY CITY

As many of our friends already know, we just love new yarns.  In fact, we think that one of Pearl's goals in life is to seek out the best and the beautiful in the yarn business, and spring time is no exception as she pursues her endless quest.  Just in, besides the usual complement of new Malabrigo yarns and new Madeline Tosh yarns, are some fascinating new fibers.  Here a bit about our two latest:

Ancient Arts is a company that specializes in high quality yarns that are dyed responsibly.  Most recently, they have partnered with The Meow Foundation, which supports feline health and humane care.  For every skein of yarn that is sold from this collection, they make a donation to benefit stray and abandoned cats in need.  You can be a part of this effort by purchasing yarn, and by learning more about the Meow Foundation and the important work Meow does in our communities.  Here's just a sampling of some of the lovely yarns we recently received in the store:

www.meowfoundation.com

GO BUMP!

Who here thinks that knitting is only for wearing?  Some of the most striking home furnishings and textiles are knitted, and we decided to get on the bandwagon with this new yarn from The BagSmith.  Working with Ohio alpaca breeders and local mill Morning Star Fiber, BagSmith has created a new yarn specifically for creating rugs, cushions, blankets and really luxurious wraps:  BUMP!

We have the yarn and  pattern book  (BUMP! VOL. 2) that will show you some of the wonderful things you can make with this soft, yet sturdy, yarn:  Rugs, Cushions, Log Cabin Throws.  Expand your knitting repetoire and your horizon with BUMP!

NEW BOOKS @ KNITTY CITY

Some of you stopped by to meet Amy Herzog last week when she was at the store to sign her new book: "Fit to Flatter".  We were (and are) all smitthen with Amy and so is that well respected Editor on yarn and all things knitting, Clara Parkes.  Read her excellent review on Amy's book here:  http://www.knittersreview.com/article_book.asp?article=/review/reading/130411_a.asp                    Then turn around and come right down to the store today to get your own copy.

Use Amy's insights and discoveries to make sure everything that you knit for yourself (or others) flatters.

Another "Essential" Book from Sally Melville

What’s the number one mistake that knitters make? They follow a pattern exactly! In this comprehensive guide to sweater construction, acclaimed knitting instructor Sally Melville reveals the secrets to creating or modifying a pattern so the finished project looks and fits exactly how you want it.

Thanks to Sally's talent for demystifying knitting, the next time you see a pattern that you fall in love with, you can modify it to suit your body and your tastes.  Knitting Pattern Essentials is one more contribution to our passion that Sally can claim - along with her original books on the Garter Stitch and the Purl Stitch.  If you ever get a chance to hear her lecture on "Why we Knit", you owe it to yourself to attend.  She's as good a speaker and writer as she is a designer - and that's saying a lot!

UPCOMING EVENTS @ KNITTY CITY

TAKE YOUR DAUGHTERS & SONS TO  KNITTY CITY ON THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 11-8 PM

"Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work" is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, so we're taking part in it by asking you to bring  your daughters and/or  sons to Knitty City!    Nothing beats teaching a child a craft - It helps facilitate the learning process and many schools are now incorporating it into their curriculum.  Bring your child in that day and we'll have something special for him or her.

Mother's Day Promotion

We have a soft spot in our hearts for all moms, and since Mother's Day is coming soon (May 12) , we thought we'd like to do something to honor her, so here it is:  Write a letter to your mom - wherever she may be.  It an be an online note, or a regular 'ol snail mail letter.  Make it 100 words (or less) and send it to Pearl.  She'll read it and give the winner a special gift card to Knitty City.  The final day for all submissions is  April 30, 2013.  If you do regular old l mail, send it to Pearl, c/o Knitty City, 208 w. 79th St., NYC 10024.  Email should be addressed to Pearl@knittycity.com

Special Staff Pick
Phyllis's   Choice for mid-April

I love knitting for kids!  It's fast, fun and no matter what you make, it's bound to look great since the wearer is so cute!

So, when one of our favorite knitting friends (June)  sent me the gift of a knitting pattern, I got right to it, and made this darling little jacket which is perfect for the oh-so changeable month of April.  The first one went to my friend's daughter and the next one is for a little girl who is looking forward to her First Birthday next month.

Here's the Ravelry  link to this adorable little knit:

  http://www.ravelry.com/stores/karen-borrels-ravelry-store

I used Plymouth Yarn's Encore in a beautiful blue Green. You'll find it on the back shelf  - to the left of the doorway to the back room.   For a size 2 it took all of 2 skeins - a bargain at twice the price.  The leaves were done in a contrasting bright spring green.

Happy Spring Everyone - Finally!
